Africa’s Ghost Reporters exposes a network of fake journalists whose articles have been published in more than a dozen countries, mainly in West and Central Africa, with a history of French colonialism.

Al Jazeera identified over 200 articles written by ghost reporters. The articles published as part of the campaign have a generally anti-French and anti-UN stance.

In one case, the I-Unit identified the profile picture used by a writer to have belonged to a deceased man from the Central African Republic. Months after his passing, the man’s photos were used to create a fake military analyst who was published in media all over Western Africa.
